About primary care

Primary care is a go-to medical home for every patient. Our practice serves a wide range of health problems from injuries and illness to chronic health conditions that may require ongoing management.

That breadth is the point. Rather than deciding in advance which specialist a problem belongs to, you bring it here first and we work out what it is. Some things are dealt with in the room that day. Some need testing, a follow-up, or a referral onward — and if it does need someone else, we still hold the overall picture.

Even when you're in good health, you may still need to come into our office for annual physicals. Physicals are essential to ensuring your body is functioning properly and to monitor any potential changes that may be early signs of a health concern.

Why the ongoing relationship matters

A single appointment can only tell us so much. What makes primary care useful is continuity — the same practice seeing you across years, so a reading sits next to the last four and a symptom you mention in passing can be matched against what you said eighteen months ago. Changes show up against a baseline, and without a baseline there is nothing to compare against.

It changes the conversation too. When we already know your history, your medications and what has or has not worked for you before, less of the visit goes on gathering background and more of it on the problem in front of you. We strive to create individualized treatment plans for each of our patients as each person has a unique history and unique needs, and that is far easier when the history is one we have watched build.

In addition to physicals, we also offer regular women's and men's preventative health screenings and exams.

What an appointment looks like

A first visit is mostly history. We go through past medical problems, surgeries, medications, allergies, what runs in your family, and how you actually live — work, sleep, diet, exercise. Then an examination, and a discussion of what needs attention now and what is worth watching over time.

An annual physical follows a similar shape with more room for the preventative side: which screenings are due for your age, how things compare with last year, and what is worth doing before the next one. Preventive care is important to keeping you healthy and lowering your risk for potential infections and diseases.

A problem-focused visit is narrower. Bring the specifics — when it started, what makes it better or worse, what you have already tried. Bring your medication list to any visit, including anything over the counter. Call (850) 481-1101 to book.

Common questions

Anything not answered here is worth asking at your consultation.

What does primary care cover?
A wide range of health problems, from injuries and illness through to chronic health conditions that may require ongoing management. It also covers the well side: annual physicals, and regular women's and men's preventative health screenings and exams. If something falls outside what can be handled here, we say so and help you get to the right place.
How often should I have a physical?
Annually is the usual rhythm. Even when you're in good health, physicals are essential to ensuring your body is functioning properly and to monitor any potential changes that may be early signs of a health concern. Much of the value comes from the comparison year to year, so keeping them regular matters more than the exact date.
Is primary care the same as family medicine?
They describe the same care from different angles. Primary care is the role — first point of contact and ongoing medical home. Family medicine is the scope — a practice that sees every age group in a household. Here they are the same physicians, so one is really a description of the other.
What if I need to be seen today?
Same-day problems are what urgent care is for, and we offer urgent care services in our office, with walk-ins seen at our 23rd Street location. Primary care is the longer thread — the follow-up afterwards, the ongoing management, and the appointment you book rather than walk into.
Can you manage a long-term condition for me?
Yes. Ongoing management is a core part of what primary care is for. Conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol are followed over time rather than settled in one visit, with regular review of how the plan is working. Call (850) 481-1101 to arrange it.

Terms you may hear

Medical home
The practice that holds your overall medical picture and acts as your first point of contact, keeping care joined up rather than treating each problem in isolation.
Annual physical
A yearly examination made while you are well, used to check that your body is functioning properly and to monitor changes that may be early signs of a concern.
Chronic condition
A health problem that persists and requires ongoing management rather than a single course of treatment, followed with regular review over months and years.
