About primary and urgent care

Most of what a family needs from medicine sits here. Primary care is the ongoing relationship — the visits where nothing is urgent, the ones where something is, and the record that connects them. Urgent care is the same practice on the day something will not wait.

Having both under one roof means the walk-in visit for a fever is seen by people who can also see the pattern behind it, and it goes into the same chart as everything else.

Why continuity matters

A single visit is a snapshot. Care that follows you is a record — what your blood pressure has done over three years, which medication you stopped and why, what your family history means for the screening you are due.

That record is what turns a five-minute appointment into a useful one. We strive to create individualized treatment plans for each of our patients as each person has a unique history and unique needs, and the history is doing much of the work.

Where to start

If you are looking for a regular provider, start with family medicine or primary care. If a child needs to be seen, pediatric care. If something has come up today, urgent care at the 23rd Street office takes walk-ins. If you are well and want to stay ahead of things, preventative care is the visit to book.

Common questions

Anything not answered here is worth asking at your consultation.

What ages do you see?
Patients of all ages. Family medicine is built to cover a whole household, from young children through to grandparents, which is why we describe ourselves as a one-stop-shop for the whole family. If it is a child who needs care, our pediatric care page covers what those visits involve.
What is the difference between family medicine and primary care?
They overlap heavily. Primary care describes the role — your first point of contact and your ongoing medical home. Family medicine describes the scope — one practice able to see every age group in your household. In our office the same physicians do both, so you can think of family medicine as primary care that does not stop at a particular age.
Do you handle vaccinations and wellness examinations?
Yes. Whether you are dealing with an illness, need vaccinations, or are due for a wellness examination, we are here to help. It is worth booking wellness visits ahead rather than waiting until something is wrong, because that is when there is time to go through screenings and family history properly.
What should I bring to a first visit?
A list of the medications you take, including anything over the counter, and what you know of your family's medical history. If you have been seen elsewhere, records or a summary help us start from the right place. Write your questions down too — they are easy to forget once you are in the room.
How do I make an appointment?
Call (850) 481-1101. Tell the front desk who needs to be seen and what it is about, and say if you would like more than one family member booked the same day. If the problem came up today rather than being something ongoing, ask about urgent care instead.
What does primary care cover?
A wide range of health problems, from injuries and illness through to chronic health conditions that may require ongoing management. It also covers the well side: annual physicals, and regular women's and men's preventative health screenings and exams. If something falls outside what can be handled here, we say so and help you get to the right place.

Terms you may hear

Family medicine
General medical care that treats patients of all ages, so one practice can look after every member of a household rather than a single age group.
Wellness examination
A scheduled visit made while you are well, used to check how your body is functioning and to notice changes early rather than to treat a problem.
Comprehensive care
Care covering the range of everyday medical needs in one place — illness, vaccinations, examinations and ongoing conditions — instead of splitting them between offices.
Medical home
The practice that holds your overall medical picture and acts as your first point of contact, keeping care joined up rather than treating each problem in isolation.
Annual physical
A yearly examination made while you are well, used to check that your body is functioning properly and to monitor changes that may be early signs of a concern.
Chronic condition
A health problem that persists and requires ongoing management rather than a single course of treatment, followed with regular review over months and years.
