When to make an appointment

Regular medical care is worth having regardless of age, and you do not need a symptom to book. These are the kinds of things worth raising at an appointment rather than waiting out.

  • You have not had a physical exam or a preventive screen in years
  • A concern you have been putting off mentioning to anyone, including a doctor
  • Changes in energy, sleep or weight that have lasted months
  • A family history of heart disease, diabetes or cancer you have never discussed
  • Something about your body that changed and has not changed back
  • A condition you have been managing on your own without regular review

This is not a diagnosis, and the list is not exhaustive. If a symptom is severe, or comes on suddenly, seek emergency care rather than an appointment.

About men's health care

At Nation's Best Family Health Care, we provide comprehensive men's health services while making you feel at ease and comfortable with your body and any health concerns you may have.

As a group, men tend to avoid discussing their health or any concerns they have with anyone, including their doctors. However, putting off physical exams and preventive screens can allow underlying conditions to progress if left untreated. As men age, there are several common conditions that men are at higher risk of developing.

Though some conditions increase risk with age, it is important to receive regular medical care regardless of how old you are. A first appointment does not need a reason beyond wanting a baseline — what your numbers are now, what your family history suggests, and what is worth keeping an eye on from here.

Why the delay is the problem

The conditions that do the most damage over a lifetime are rarely the ones that hurt early. High blood pressure, high cholesterol and high blood sugar tend to be quiet at exactly the stage when they are most worth acting on, which is also the stage most men skip.

That is the case for regular care rather than symptom-driven care. A physical exam and the preventive screens appropriate to your age give us something to compare against later, and comparison is where a lot of early detection actually comes from. One number on its own says less than the same number three years running.

The other half of it is the conversation. If there is something you have not mentioned to anyone, this is a place to mention it. We strive to create individualized treatment plans for each of our patients, because each person has a unique history and unique needs — and that starts with knowing what is actually going on.

What an appointment looks like

Expect a conversation first. We will ask about your medical history and your family's, what you take, how you are sleeping, what your work does to your body, and anything you have noticed and not mentioned. Then a physical exam, and a discussion of which preventive screens make sense for your age and history.

Nothing on that list happens without being explained first. If a screen is recommended, you will hear what it looks for and why it applies to you, and you can ask what would happen if it found something.

If you have results from elsewhere — labs, a work physical, an old exam — bring them. And if the reason you booked is one specific worry, say it early rather than on the way out the door. Call (850) 481-1101 to book an appointment.

Common questions

Anything not answered here is worth asking at your consultation.

I feel fine. Do I still need to come in?
If it has been a while, yes. Putting off physical exams and preventive screens can allow underlying conditions to progress if left untreated, and many of them cause nothing you would notice early on. It is important to receive regular medical care regardless of how old you are.
What counts as a men's health concern?
Anything you would rather not have to bring up. Men as a group tend to avoid discussing their health with anyone, including their doctors, so a fair amount of what we see has been carried around for months first. We provide comprehensive men's health services, and none of it is treated as an awkward subject.
Does risk really change with age?
As men age, there are several common conditions they are at higher risk of developing. That said, though some conditions increase risk with age, it is important to receive regular medical care regardless of how old you are. Age changes what is worth screening for, not whether screening is worth doing.
Can I ask about hormones at a men's health appointment?
Yes. If your symptoms point that way, hormones are one of the things that can be discussed and assessed alongside everything else in your history. What is recommended, if anything, follows the assessment rather than the question, but the question itself is a normal one to ask here.
What should I bring?
Any results you already have, a list of your medications and supplements, what you know of your family's medical history, and the one thing you actually came in for. Write that last one down if you are likely to talk yourself out of it. Call (850) 481-1101 to book.

Terms you may hear

Preventive screen
A test done before symptoms appear, chosen against your age and history, so that a condition can be found while it is still quiet.
Physical exam
A structured examination alongside your history, used to establish a baseline and to check for things you would have no way of noticing yourself.
Risk factor
Something in your history, your family or your habits that raises the chance of a condition developing. Risk factors decide what is worth screening for.
