About family medicine

Here at Nation's Best Family Health Care we are proud to offer family medicine and are devoted to providing excellent comprehensive care to patients of all ages. We know how frustrating and time consuming it can be to run back and forth between different offices for your medical needs, so we are happy to be your one-stop-shop for the whole family.

Whether you are dealing with an illness, need vaccinations, or are due for a wellness examination, we are here to help you experience quality healthcare every time you visit us. Our highly trained physicians will work with you to make sure you are comfortable with each step of your examination and treatment, and are more than happy to answer your questions.

Why one practice for the whole family

Health runs in families, and so does context. When the same practice sees the parents, the children and the grandparents, the things that repeat — blood pressure, cholesterol, thyroid trouble, migraines — stop looking like isolated events and start looking like a family history. That history changes what we ask about and what we watch for.

There is a practical side too. Keeping everyone in one office means one place to call, one set of records, and fewer afternoons spent driving between appointments. A single morning can cover a child's school form, a parent's follow-up and a vaccination that is due, without three separate trips.

We strive to create individualized treatment plans for each of our patients as each person has a unique history and unique needs. That holds just as true within one family as between families.

What an appointment looks like

Most visits start the same way: what has changed since we last saw you, what you are dealing with now, and anything you have been meaning to mention. We go through your history, examine you, and talk about what we think is going on and what the options are. Our physicians will work with you to make sure you are comfortable with each step of your examination and treatment.

If it is a wellness examination, expect a broader conversation — sleep, diet, stress, what runs in your family, and which screenings are due for your age. If it is an illness, the focus narrows to that. Either way, bring a list of your current medications and any questions you have written down.

Booking more than one family member on the same day is usually possible. Call (850) 481-1101 and tell the front desk who needs to be seen.

Common questions

Anything not answered here is worth asking at your consultation.

What ages do you see?
Patients of all ages. Family medicine is built to cover a whole household, from young children through to grandparents, which is why we describe ourselves as a one-stop-shop for the whole family. If it is a child who needs care, our pediatric care page covers what those visits involve.
What is the difference between family medicine and primary care?
They overlap heavily. Primary care describes the role — your first point of contact and your ongoing medical home. Family medicine describes the scope — one practice able to see every age group in your household. In our office the same physicians do both, so you can think of family medicine as primary care that does not stop at a particular age.
Do you handle vaccinations and wellness examinations?
Yes. Whether you are dealing with an illness, need vaccinations, or are due for a wellness examination, we are here to help. It is worth booking wellness visits ahead rather than waiting until something is wrong, because that is when there is time to go through screenings and family history properly.
What should I bring to a first visit?
A list of the medications you take, including anything over the counter, and what you know of your family's medical history. If you have been seen elsewhere, records or a summary help us start from the right place. Write your questions down too — they are easy to forget once you are in the room.
How do I make an appointment?
Call (850) 481-1101. Tell the front desk who needs to be seen and what it is about, and say if you would like more than one family member booked the same day. If the problem came up today rather than being something ongoing, ask about urgent care instead.

Terms you may hear

Family medicine
General medical care that treats patients of all ages, so one practice can look after every member of a household rather than a single age group.
Wellness examination
A scheduled visit made while you are well, used to check how your body is functioning and to notice changes early rather than to treat a problem.
Comprehensive care
Care covering the range of everyday medical needs in one place — illness, vaccinations, examinations and ongoing conditions — instead of splitting them between offices.
